The Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Gallery at Holy Cross College in Worcester (Mass.), United States, presents paintings by French artist Gabrielle Thierry in the exhibition "Gabrielle Thierry: The Musicality of the Water Lilies/La Musicalité des Nymphéas" - August/September 2027
"As a painter, I have been conducting research for several years on the interpretation of landscape in search of its musicality. I distinguish not only the landscape as I see it but also its rhythms and music that I transform into colored scores. The work presented here is the representation of the musicality of Claude Monet's Water Lilies. Each of the 8 panels exhibited at the Musée de l'Orangerie is studied to transcribe its own music, translated into a musical and pictorial space on canvas."
Gabrielle Thierry creates her abstract canvases by crossing the emotions that painting and music give her, linked to Synesthesia.
Roger Hankins, director of the Cantor Art Gallery, collaborated with Brit Smith, director of the Holy Cross study abroad program, and Maurice Géracht, Stephen J. Prior Professor of Humanities, to organize this exhibition. Géracht and Smith are the coordinators of the International Conference "Words and Images," organized with the University of Paris-Diderot and the University of Burgundy in Dijon. Géracht and Smith are the co-editors of "Interfaces," a recognized and award-winning journal dedicated to publications from these annual conferences. Events as part of the exhibition
The Gallery
Founded in 1983 by Iris & B. Gerald Cantor, the Cantor Art Gallery is both a venue for contemporary public exhibitions and a vital resource for Holy Cross professors and students, connecting exhibitions to the art curriculum. It is now located in the prestigious Prior Performing Arts Center. The Cantor Art Gallery was inaugurated with the exhibition "Auguste Rodin, 1840-1917," October 1983, presenting 31 bronzes by the artist. Five of these sculptures were donated by the Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Foundation and are now part of the permanent collection.
